Look around your home and see how many things you're using right now plugged into electricity - there's the laptop, your phone is charging, the TV is on your favorite show, dinner is in the crockpot, you're watching the baby on the monitor. If the electrical panel in your home isn't functioning properly it can disrupt your day to day life. It can also cause hazardous electrical issues that you want resolved immediately.
Give us a call to make sure your panel and breakers are operating properly so you don't miss a step!
If you are experiencing any of the following issues, it's time to give a LICENSED Electrician a call! Even if it's not us - your safety is of utmost importance! Please do not attempt to troubleshoot an electrical panel!
I live in an older home, why do I suddenly have breakers tripping often?
When older homes were built, they were built to accommodate the current electrical load at the time. With our lives becoming more and more dependent on electrical components in our homes, the load on the panel is greater. The older panel likely can't keep up with the electrical load of all the electronics in the home. This can result in needing a larger panel to accommodate the new electrical load. Not ready to take that leap? We can always take a look and see which breakers are taking on the most load. We can recommend moving certain electrical components to evenly distribute the load so one breaker isn't being overloaded.
Updating a panel seems intense - how much does something like that cost?
That can be a loaded question! it depends on several factors that we will discuss at a consultation. Those factors include how many amps the panel is you want, if rewiring needs to occur to fit the new panel, and labor costs. You'll also want to factor in the cost of getting a permit and if your area charges for inspections or if that is included in permitting. Because there are so many factors, it's hard to give an estimate without knowing your specific situation. For a large range - this can cost between $1000 - $5000 + depending on the complexity of the installation. Just replacing a faulty breaker is much less costly.
My electrical panel is buzzing - is that bad?
Probably! It's definitely not great! If your panel is ever buzzing, sparking, popping, cracking, etc. ALWAYS consider this an emergency and contact a LICENSED Electrician IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT TOUCH THE PANEL!! What you CAN do is unplug anything that isn't absolutely necessary in your home and turn off any lights that aren't necessary. This will lighten the load on your electrical panel to prevent the problem from worsening before we can get to you.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
There are several things that can cause breakers to continuously trip. The main one we see is an overloaded circuit. This can often be resolved by evaluating what items are using that circuit and distributing your power needs to other circuit areas to lighten the load on that particular breaker. In some cases, large appliances may need a dedicated circuit for their power needs.
There could also be a short circuit or ground fault. Both can be dangerous when left undiagnosed. Short circuits we often see due to damage by animals chewing the wires, although it can also happen just from loose connections or something faulty along the circuit. Ground Faults happen when the hot and ground wires touch the metal housing and are particularly dangerous because they can burn and cause a fire or deliver an electrical shock if you touch the area. If you suspect a short circuit or ground fault, PLEASE contact a LICESNED Electrician immediately and DO NOT attempt to repair yourself.
